Bridging options

Bridging options

What should I do if my child doesn’t get an apprenticeship?

Young people who are unsuccessful in finding an apprenticeship can make use of what is known as a “bridging option”, in other words an interim solution that increases their chances of finding an apprenticeship later and is a sensible use of the time.

There are various bridging options geared to the specific needs of young people: a voluntary return to school for a year, a year-long preparatory course, shorter preparatory courses or practical training.

The bridging option prepares young people for vocational training. They gain practical experience, improve their school grades and learn to identify and develop their strengths. They also receive help in choosing their profession or looking for an apprenticeship.

Ask the teacher or careers adviser early about the options that are available. They will be able to tell you what will best suit your child, when and how to apply and what it costs. You can also apply for a contribution to costs, but you have to make this request before the deadline.
