Children who speak foreign languages

What is available for children who speak a different language?

Special catch-up lessons are held for children who do not speak the language used in the local school. This additional tuition is free. Children usually attend these lessons for one to two years.

A very few communities also offer an integration class for children who speak a different language and have recently moved to the canton of Grisons. Children are given intensive instruction in the school language in this class for six to 12 months to help them integrate into school.

Attending lessons in the native language and culture (heimatlicher Sprache und Kultur - HSK) is voluntary, but is recommended. Children can broaden their knowledge of the language and culture of their country of origin. These courses are organised by parents’ associations or embassies. The better children speaks their native tongue, the easier it will be for them to learn the local language.
