Upper secondary school

Upper secondary school

What is an upper secondary school?

The first nine years of education are compulsory for all children in Switzerland. The more advanced schools, after compulsory schooling, are upper secondary schools, or also known as Gymnasium, Kantonsschule, “Gymi” or “Kanti”. Attendance is voluntary. Good grades are required in order to attend an upper secondary school. Upper secondary school ends with a baccalaureate. This is required in order to later pursue an academic education, at a university, for example. There are also upper secondary schools that lead to a specialised baccalaureate or Federal vocational baccalaureate.
