The better children can speak their mother tongue, the easier they will find it later to learn the local language. Take time to talk to your child in your language.
Talk to your son or daughter whilst you are doing the housework. Listen to them and answer them when they talk to you. Go outside together – to the playground, to a wood, to a lake, to the zoo. Talk about everything you see, as this will help them to expand their vocabulary. Look at story books together and tell stories.
At the playground or in the playgroup, your child will have opportunities to mix with Swiss children. Show you are pleased when your child learns new words in the local language. This will encourage him or her to learn more.
