Looking for a job

It is worth telling friends and acquaintances that you are looking for a job. In this way you might find out about a job before it is advertised and be able to apply.

Many jobs are advertised publicly too, usually in the regular situations vacant sections in daily newspapers. Trade journals also often contain job advertisements. If you do not subscribe to a daily newspaper, you can go to the library or a café, where you can read daily and weekly newspapers.

Job ads can be viewed at the Regional Job Placement Centres (RAV) and can be found in daily newspapers, the regional or municipal gazettes, in temping agencies and on the Internet.

The Internet is becoming increasingly important as a job market. There are many different job boards on the Internet. Some of these job search engines are free, some apply a charge. In the case of the chargeable job search engines, you can usually submit a job search for a specific period. You will then be sent notification of new vacancies by e-mail.

Many companies advertise their vacancies on the company website. Look up companies direct on the Internet, or telephone them. You can do this if you are interested in a company but it is not advertising any jobs. This is known as a speculative application. Serious, detailed applications will stand a good chance, but it must be clear from the paperwork that the applicant has thoroughly researched the company.
